A very happy and excited little Mila - she can hear! We are thrilled to have 35 children going through our signature "Bikabele Hearing Aid & Speech Therapy Program".

Each child in this proram is sponsored by a family, group, or organisation to cover the costs of testing and fitting of two Hearing Aids each, which is followed up with an extensive Speech Therapy phase which will last at least 12 months.

This Therapy phase is to ensure that, not only the child, but also the carer / guardian or teacher of the child adapt well with the child's new ability to hear, and in order to teach the child to develop their speech skills through to a stage where they can competently put sentences together.

From here, these children can then look forward to a far more normal life, eventually go onto standard schooling and acquiring skills to eventually seek employment.

Bikabele members regularly visit the ABDI Hearing Centre and Orphanages to catch up with the childrens' progress along with receiving regular reports from Speech Therapists on the childrens' progress.

The growth in confidence of children in this Program is nothing short of amazing.  We are continuously touched by the kids actions, their new willingness to come forward and approach us, and offer continuous hugs of appreciation; not to mention beaming smiles that were previously sometimes difficult to find on their faces at all.   Thats aside from watching them learning to talk and discover a whole new method of communication.   To have a previously mute child come up to us and actually say, "Terima kasih" (meaning "receive love" in Indonesian, translated to "thank you" in English), you can imagine is particularly rewarding and humbling.   Needless to say, we have been overwhelmed with the progress of the children to date, and this makes us only stronger in our will to proceed with this Program for as many children as Sponsors become available for help a little deaf & mute child move forward in their lives.

Bikabele operates the Program in the most personalised way we possibly can, keeping Sponsors informed of their childs progress and forwarding new photos of their child when available. We encourage all Sponsors to meet with their sponsored child if they are planning a trip to Bali, and we guarantee the rewards and sense of enjoyment and satisfaction far outweighs the small cost of participating in the Program and giving a child the ability to hear laughter and song.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT DOES THE TREATMENT PROCESS INVOLVE?
Assessment Phase
Step 1: The child is introduced into our program by the Orphanage with signed Letters of Approval from the child's guardian or parent(s).
Step 2: The child is individually assessed by Doctors at Sanglah Hospital, Denpasar, and if, in this preliminary diagnosis the Doctor is of the opinion the child suffers from acute deafness, the Doctor issues a Certificate.
This acts as a referral to our Hearing Specialist (Narno Supangat) to test the child thoroughly for appropriateness of conventional hearing aid(s) being fitted. Narno will make his assessment as to whether the child will benefit from this treatment, and if so, the child is then accepted into and commences the program immediately.
Step 3: Once accepted for continuance in the program, the child goes through further testing for fitting of hearing aid(s) over four visits to the specialist in Denpasar.
Step 4: Child's hearing aid(s) are supplied and fitted.
Therapy Phase
Step 5: The child with a carer, teacher or guardian will be introduced to regular Therapy sessions based at the orphanage where the child resides.  Both the child and carer are taught techniques to allow the child to both cope with their new physical environment, learn words and basic sentence structure, and adapt in their interaction with each other.

This is a lengthy, but essential part of the program, to ensure all children adapt and take full advantage of their new hearing abilities, whilst providing the childrens' carers the skills necessary to give ongoing support and instruction.

Therapy will continue for a minimum of 12 months.   It is also a big commitment by the carers themselves.  This commitment shows the dedication involved and the willingness for this treatment to be provided.

Part of the responsibility Bikabele undertakes is to provide the necessary transport from the Orphanage Houses in the country areas, to ensure all parties have the facility to travel to Denpasar as required, which in many cases would not otherwise be possible.

WHAT ARE THE COSTS TO SPONSOR A CHILD?
On the basis of 3 children joining the Program together at any given time - the total cost of testing, providing 2 hearing aids per child, and implementing therapy is currently AUD$850 per child.

Bikabele Cares for Kids has launched a program seeking individual, family or group sponsors for each child, which can be structured in three ways - as follows:
♥ SPONSORSHIP PACKAGE A: Sponsor for both the Testing and Provision of 2 Hearing Aids, as well as the ongoing Therapy phase to a value of AUD$850. (complete package)
♥ SPONSORSHIP PACKAGE B: Sponsor the Testing & Provision of 2 Hearing Aids Phase only, to the value of AUD$560.
♥ SPONSORSHIP PACKAGE C: Sponsor a child for the provision of Therapy for up to 12 months to the value of AUD$290.

WHAT INVOLVEMENT OR INTERACTION CAN I HAVE WITH THE CHILD I SPONSOR?
Each Sponsor will receive a Certificate with the photo & details of the child they are sponsoring, and will be given updates on progress (preferably by email).   Also, additional updated photos will be emailed as they become available.

For those Sponsors visiting Bali at any time, arrangements can be made in advance for them to meet their sponsored child and carer.  We do encourage this, and you will find it a most rewarding visit.

Wayan, our driver in Bali, wil arrange with the relevant Orphanage for your visit and take you along to meet your child.   He will happily translate for you during your visit so you can ask any questions you wish and get feedback.
